I waited all February for a mild (above -15 C) day to capture an image for March’s calendar. It didn’t happen. So, having run right out of time, on Feb 28 with the temperature at -22 C, I bundled up and headed out with gear in hand. I had hoped with such constant cold that the trees along this creek would be nicely frosted but between bright sun and raging winds of late, most frost had been weathered away. Thankfully, the heavy accumulation of snow softened and brightened the ragged river bed offering nice contrast to the dark turbulent waters. I decided the shot would suffice. I hope you like it. March has come in as a lion if -30C with wind chill warning of -40C to -45C is considered fierce! Hopefully, there will be a much warmer looking scene for next month.

Gooseberry Falls

Recently we did a road trip covering 4400 km. It took us completely around both Lake Superior and Lake Huron. It was part business, part pleasure. Of course I had my photo gear along but did not have the opportunities I had hoped for some photo shoots. One stop we specifically made was at Gooseberry Falls MN just north up Hwy 61 from Duluth MN. It had been more than 30 years since my last hike along the river there; so long ago, I had completely forgotten about it. We drive by that spot many times every year but had not taken any time for a very long time.

Okay, enough talk. Here are the falls just below the bridge on Hwy 61 this October.

Ah, aren’t they pretty! If any of you have been there, you might not recognize them like this. I’m certain they must usually be part of a raging, roaring river!
I was very happy to find them so gentle, so soft. Especially when I took note of the ravine and what the absence of water revealed!

This sequence of shots just a little down stream were taken quite late in the day. I wanted to take advantage of less light for slower shutter speeds to give me the silky water look.

I love how purple the rock in the foreground came out in the shot.

Photo tip: when shooting at or after sunset, be sure to have a flashlight along to find your way home!

Freezing point

We all know water freezes at 0 degrees Celsius (32F). When the air temperature hovers at that point we can find water in both solid and liquid form.
This day the spring melt falls over a highway rock cut and builds ice at the bottom.
