what the dew can do

A cool damp morning as the mist is chased by the sun, tiny insect webs are revealed.

Simplify

In an effort to simplify my life, I have decided to not provided desktop calendars for the coming year. Although I love to do digital art, the deadline of something every 30-ish days had, admittedly, become stressful. I plan to continue photographing the beautiful and unusual in ‘my backyard’ and will try to get some posted here for you.

It has been very rewarding to see my desktop calendars on the computer screens of friends and family and to know there are many others who have downloaded them. Thank you!

I plan to continue creating 4″ x 6″ fridge calendars.  Here is a slideshow of the images in the 2016 calendar. I still have copies available. They are $10 each and include a strong magnetic clip. Please contact me if you are interested.

November 2015 Calendar

We may not get much for glorious red maples in our part of the country in the fall but the under brush of the boreal forest still paints beautiful scenes with flaming yellows and oranges and reds.

Optical Prism?

While shooting the spectacular morning of previous post, I noticed a bright patch of light to the right side of the island.

At first I thought it was a beam of sunlight breaking through the mist but as the morning brightened and at closer look, a spectrum of colour was clear.

The full range of colour became even clearer as it seemed to stretch and move closer to shore.

Physics was not a strong subject of mine in school and is still a challenge to process. Even searching on line to find what this is or how it is formed made my head hurt. The best (simplest) info I found was this Wikipedia article for ‘prism‘. What I do know is it was a treat to notice and capture it.

Up wind surprise

Yesterday we were able to get away to our private cottage (camp) for a night to decompress after some stressful work days. This morning Lindor & I headed down to the dock to enjoy the solitude and warmth of the rising sun. While sipping my coffee, I was startled to hear a rustle and splashing down the shore from me. I looked expectantly for a loon or other water bird but found to my surprise, a young bull moose wandering out from the brush and into the water for breakfast in the reeds. Realizing I had neglected to bring my DSLR down the 22 steps, I reached for my phone (always on me) to capture what I could before he noticed me or my dog. Both brown boys were oblivious to each other as the moose was up wind of me and Lindor was exploring the shoreline in the opposite direction!

I finally gave in to the temptation to move and as quietly as I could, snuck up to the cabin to notify Brad, distract Lindor and grab the DSLR from inside the cabin. In my excitement, I let the screen door close not so quietly behind me which alerted the moose to our presence. I managed 1 quick shot before he took cover in the greenery. I don’t plan to leave my DSLR behind next peaceful dock time!!

August 2014 Calendar – Island in the storm

One of my favourite aspects of living lake-side is watching the rain move across the lake. Whether a light shower or raging storm, the sight, sound and smell is amazing. This past week we experienced several days of sudden and brief thunderstorms. I was able to capture the dramatic change in the colours of sky, shore and water before heading for cover!

I decided to lay the calendars on two images taken in the sequence but could not decide which I liked better. So, I’ve set them both up so you can choose. Different screen resolutions can be found here.
