Glimmer of Sun

After several days of rain and fog the sun almost poked through. It has been unseasonably warm and the lake remains unfrozen.

Ice – in or out?

Agimak Lake had a skim of ice on its surface for two days. The air was calm and temperatures over night were below freezing. Then we had a strong south wind and the inch of ice broke up and piled up along the shore.
The sound was like was tinkling glass.

Waves created a chevron pattern in the broken pieces of ice.
It really could have been a spring day.

Calming the sea

A skim of ice defines a clear line between the ripples on the lake and the icy surface.

The ice is not rigid but moves gently as water seeps up through openings in the surface.

Pretty soon

Our lake will soon freeze over. Hopefully, not too soon. There was just a light skim in the grassy flats by the dam just down the lake shore this morning.
