Ice – in or out?

Agimak Lake had a skim of ice on its surface for two days. The air was calm and temperatures over night were below freezing. Then we had a strong south wind and the inch of ice broke up and piled up along the shore.
The sound was like was tinkling glass.

Waves created a chevron pattern in the broken pieces of ice.
It really could have been a spring day.

Calming the sea

A skim of ice defines a clear line between the ripples on the lake and the icy surface.

The ice is not rigid but moves gently as water seeps up through openings in the surface.

Fold in snow

It is unfortunate the English language is not like other more expressive tongues. I wish we had words to describe snow like the Inuit do with descriptive terms.
Snow flakes/crystals have totally different properties depending on temperature and humidity. When the air is just around the freezing point, snow is rather sticky.

The warmer my vehicle got, the slipperier it got.
