Dance at dawn

As the fog was burning off this morning, Lindor was burning off some energy. There he goes!

Just a little something

Happy National Machine Quilting Day!

Besides playing with pixels, I spend a lot of my leisure time playing with threads. Quilting has been a satisfying pastime of mine for quite a while. I particularly enjoy the creativity of stitching the layers of fabric together. I do this on all sizes of quilts using a regular, domestic sewing machine. In honour of National Machine Quilting Day, I thought I’d share some shots of my latest project. Others may be added in the future and archived on a new menu page: Threads FiberArt {I changed my mind}

Prairie Lily is featured on the cover of “Little by Little, Quilts in Miniature” by Mary Hickey (That Patchwork Place 1988) and has always charmed me. I decided to make it for our local quilt guild mini quilt auction which will take place at this year’s quilt show. I drew the block pattern (flower part) in EQ (Electric Quilt software) so I could print out paper foundation pieces. This allows for a ‘sew by number’ type of construction. The machine quilting was all done free hand (no templates or marking).

This was the first time I changed the threads on the back to match those on the front. That way I didn’t have to deal with the top or bottom thread showing up on the wrong side which was what was happening as seen below. I removed the heart border stitches, put pink thread in the bobbin and decided to do a feather border instead!

Black or white

It’s odd how ice can appear one or the other.This puddle in my drive way lies on gravel and has a pocket of air under it. You know the kind, the ones you smash under your feet as kids.This one was on my neighbour’s paved driveway. The less porous surface left no room for air to be captured underneath.

No doubt by the time these shots are posted today, the warmth of the sun will have transformed the solid to liquid and maybe even vapour!

Moody March

After 2 glorious days of sun and warmth the weather turned gray and damp. I headed out in the drizzle, camera and umbrella in hand. I didn’t realize how soft the snow had become. With each step on the trail my rubber boot sank deeper than it’s full height! I’m sure I looked like I was marching as I trekked along.Returning; in the foreground you can see my deep tracks. I caught the edge of my umbrella in the top left. My vehicle awaits in the distance.

Winter swim

Part of our daily routine in winter is getting out for a walk with our chocolate lab, Lindor. He absolutely loves everything about being outside. He’s happy, happy to trot along side us down the road but is extra happy fetching anything we throw for him in deep snow. Although I’ve shared this shot before (below), it is so typical and makes me laugh every time I see it.

Changing times

I’m not sure if it’s because of the pending ‘spring forward’ time change this week end or thoughts of spring cleaning but I decided it was tie to change up and clean up my blog. Hope you like the new header and layout. More changes to come.
